The Shadow
Throughout the house she prowls,
Unhesitant, fearless —her bells clinking,
Bound around her feet,
Chime, chime, chime, they sing.
Never does she rest a moment
close to me, in peace.
But slips between my steps,
If I offer her food—she shies away,
searching for something - restlessly
in my house
forever wandering, eluding, restless,
Chime, chime, chime.
She leaps, sudden and wild,
Out the window, fleeing—
To where, I know not.
Gradually, the tinkling grows faint,
A distant sound that dwindles—
I watch her disappear—
beyond the red and yellow blooms,
Behind the swaying bushes.
I watch her fade
In shades of black, brown,
and speckled grey,
that white-streaked,
shadowed feline.
Then, startled, I rise,
From dreams deep and dark —
only to find her - close by,
standing still,
Gazing with eyes of crimson.
Strange, haunting—
yet innocent, sweet,
that endearing cat.
